There was a real buzz at this year’s exhibition, as parents, friends and people from the design industry came to see our GCSE, AS and A level exam work. Contemporary and sculptural pieces caught the eye of many visitors, some of whom even enquired if the pieces were for sale.
The work of some very talented young designers was on display. This year’s GCSE theme was
furniture, and this had been interpreted in a wide variety of ways. Laminated plywood was the
preferred material for many projects, and there were desks and chairs, cabinets and stools and a
whole range of garden and street furniture. AS level looked at forms and processes and experimented
with materials on a model scale. Meanwhile at A level the students were required to design for a
real client, and whilst the conceptual pieces weren’t quite finished they all exhibited huge
potential.
